YOU The right candidates should: show an interest in urban agriculture, be eager to learn the technical aspects of maintaining an aquaponic system, be flexible, and able to troubleshoot on their own when necessary as well as maintain excellent communication with the ESW team. We are also willing to develop research projects that can count towards academic credit as well as offer a share of the crops that we grow (basil, arugula, and chard). We will provide learning opportunities, networking, and facilitate professional development specific to the interns’ interests. What: Our intern responsibilities include: – basic hydroponic systems operaon (pH + EC monitoring, plant pest management on NFT, flow beds, and vertically-integrated hydro systems) – basic aquaponics operation (water quality data collection, system cleaning, fish health assessment and feeding) – growing space upkeep (sweeping, organizing, cleaning and sterilizing equipment, cleaning up spills) – some general construction and building.ĬOMPENSATION This internship is unpaid but provides technical training and experience in urban agriculture. Where: Some work will be completed remotely however the ability to commute to Hellgate Farm in Long Island City 2-3 times/week is a must. Interns are required to join staff on-site during work days which occur anywhere from 1-6 days a month depending on the season and project needs. These hours include check ins of the systems during the week(to take measurements and as-needed workdays at Hellgate Farm in LIC. Start and end dates are flexible according to availability. When: Internship duration is flexible with a minimum commitment of 3 months, dates are flexible and open from Mid March through November. Who: responsible and ambitious high school and college students, recent graduates, and professionals looking to learn about aquaponics. To aid us in our build up we are looking for 2-3 interns to help build, seed, monitor, and maintain our aquaponic System. Aer prototyping and testing, we are gearing up for a system expansion in the 2018 growing season. POSITION Last year we partnered with Hellgate Farms in Long Island City, to design and construct an aquaponic system. We are a volunteer-based organization with members developing projects within their communities. Through project-focused partnerships crossing institutional, private and governmental sectors, the NYC chapter strives to be a hub of knowledge and resources to address the needs of diverse communities with solutions that promote environmental awareness, social vitality, and economic health. WHO WE ARE Engineers for A Sustainable World is a national, nonprofit network committed to building a more sustainable world. Each lab is outfitted with a class set of microscopes and triple-beam balances.Aquaponics Internship - Spring, Summer & Fall 2018 Long Island City, NY Our labs include DNA extraction, running gel electrophoresis, DNA fingerprinting and barcoding. GESC’s biotechnology lab provides students and their teachers the opportunity to work with professional, high-grade equipment. Students and their teachers can participate in a variety of classes that include observation and interaction with these animals and many more mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians, insects and marine life. Fauna is home to over 100 Bess Beetles, Hermit Crabs and Fire-belly Toads. The greenhouse is an active lab for botany instruction including numerous Hydroponic and Aquaponic systems. Flora also serves as a learning lab for our Hydroponics, Pondaponics and Aquaculture classes. Flora has four grow labs that provide GESC with a steady supply of plants to study. ![]() GESC has two unique learning labs dedicated specifically for plant (flora) and animal (fauna) investigations and research.
